Marcos Oliveira, Genetics doctoral candidate in Laurie Kaguni’s lab, has won the Barnett Rosenberg Graduate Fellowship from the College of Natural Science. This highly prestigious college-wide award is given on the basis of accomplishments and promise in research, teaching and service.

Yogesh Saini won a first place award for best graduate student poster from the Metals Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology (SOT), and a young investigator research award from the association of scientists of Indian origin at the SOT.

Laurie Kaguni and Genetics Ph.D. student  Marcos Oliveira are working (and playing) in Finland on a research project on mitochondrial DNA variation, evolution and disease.  The new project is being launched in collaboration with Howy Jacobs and his group at the Institute of Medical Technology, Tampere University ().

Christoph Benning, in recognition of his ability to recognize and review original research, as well as his own scientific contributions, Christoph Benning, Michigan State professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, has been named the next editor-in-chief of The Plant Journal, an international journal devoted to publishing original research papers on fundamental plant biology problems.

Mariam Sticklen, Professor of Crop and Soil Sciences, working with a Kansas company has licensed Michigan State University technology that uses enzymes from a microbe in a cow’s stomach to create plants that can be more efficiently turned into biofuel. (Sept. 03, 2008)

Tejas Kadaki awarded the Hsiung-Kimball Award, which is given annually to one graduate or undergraduate student "on the basis of academic excellence and potential to succeed in their chosen field." Preference is given, when possible, to an applicant whose academic interests are in either clinical virology or bacteriology. (May 4, 2007)
