Typical First Year

During the first year, a typical graduate student in the Genetics Program will complete three ten-week laboratory rotations (GEN 880), and three or four required courses including Molecular Biology (BCH 801), Microbial Genetics (MIC 833), and Eukaryotic Molecular Genetics (MIC 835). All Genetics Program graduate students, including the incoming students, are expected to attend the Genetics Retreat held in the late summer or early fall of each year. Generally, after completing three laboratory rotations (approximately nine months) but before the end of the first twelve months, the Genetics Program graduate student should have selected a major professor who is a member of the Genetics Program faculty.

During their first year, Genetics Program graduate students will be advised directly by the Director and/or Associate Director. At the end of each academic year of graduate studies, Genetics students and their mentors are required to complete an annual progress report.
